Wilderness conservationists like to point out that once wilderness is gone it is lost forever. While that is an effective message it is not entirely true. It is possible with a long-term vision to actually restore an area back to a wilderness state.
The restoration of wilderness is what the Rewilding Institute focuses on. They have a big picture vision where long-term efforts re-establish complete continental-scale wild ecosystems. They envision the restoration of apex predator keystone species over vast areas with their far-ranging habitats anchored and protected by large wilderness cores and sustained by wilderness links between those cores.
